OTTAWA SET TO HOST CANADIAN ALBACORE SAILING CHAMPIONSHIP

OTTAWA SET TO HOST CANADIAN ALBACORE SAILING CHAMPIONSHIP

OTTAWA - September 13, 2006 - Albacore sailboats from across North America are expected this weekend in Ottawa as part of the 2006 WaveRate Canadian Albacore Championship regatta. The three-day event starts Friday, September 15 and runs through Sunday, September 17, 2006 at the Nepean Sailing Club. Founded in 1979, the Nepean Sailing Club is located at Dick Bell Park on Lac Deschenes, a part of the Ottawa River.

"Albacore sailing is a great sport for sailors of all ages," said Van Sheppard, event coordinator and Ottawa Albacore sailor. "We expect the competition to be high this weekend. A lot of top teams are coming in this weekend for the 2006 WaveRate Canadian Albacore Championships. The weather forecast promises some challenging conditions for the regatta."

At 15 feet in length and 240 pounds hull weight, the Albacore is a great first boat for those who are just learning to sail and a very competitive racer for more advanced sailors. Traveling around the globe to participate in regattas is not uncommon in the Albacore fleet -- some of the best in class are expected to compete for the Canadian title as part of the 2006 WaveRate Canadian Albacore Championship. A large portion of the Albacore fleet is expected from community clubs in Ottawa and Toronto, with additional sailors from various communities across Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and the United States.

Sailing is an intellectual sport that combines physical skill and knowledge of wind conditions - together on the racecourse; sailing is a sport that pushes your limits. The 2006 WaveRate Canadian Albacore Championship offer something for sailors of all skill sets with a subsidized Challenger fleet for those just starting to get into racing. The regatta is open to all sailors who meet class membership and yacht measurement requirements.

In Ottawa there are numerous community-based clubs to learn how to sail, many of which use Albacores as training boats. In addition to Nepean Sailing Club who have one of the largest and most competitive Albacore fleets in the city, Kanata Sailing Club and the RA Centre all offer learn to sail programs that are a fun way to get involved in the sport of sailing. Volunteer based clubs provide an economical way to learn to sail in a social setting.
