A passing cold front and high winds greeted the 34 boat fleet. Winds were over 15 knots as the fleet headed out to the course and increased to 20-25 knots before the start of the race with gusts approaching 30 knots. Big waves and sharp gusts made for challenging conditions kept some boats on shore and turned others back before the start.
About 15 boats started the race, fighting upwind. With a failing main halyard, Barney Harris and Dave Byron were unable to point high, but cranked up the speed more than enough to make up for it arriving at the windward mark 20 lengths ahead of a pack of boats.
The pack rounded the weather mark and screamed down the reach. Catching booms on waves a few boats wiped out. Many of those who made it to the wing mark tried “chicken gybes”, but it wasn’t long before the water was cluttered with capsized boats- most recovered to continue on.
Of the nine boats that finished over half capsized at least once during the race. Van Sheppard swam twice and Marty Hublitz capsized three times, but still managed to finish in fourth place. Barney Harris won the race by a large margin. Nepean sailor Ross Findlater was second. Following the race the committee sent everyone to shore so they could complete the rescues. With winds continuing to build to nearly 30 knots the remaining races for the day were cancelled.
